“Self-love has very little to do with how you feel about your outer self. It’s about accepting all of yourself.” -Tyra Banks

meI woke up late today and had to rush to get ready to head to school with Zack. I have an interview later and I couldn’t find my brush and nothing was going right. I felt like I was failing everything. The was supposed to start off good, I was supposed to be excited about this upcoming interview. But instead, I was thinking about how ugly I was going to look because I had to rush. I was thinking about how I didn’t prepare enough so I was going to fail the interview. I was being all around negative and hateful to myself.

Have you ever felt like you hated yourself, for one reason or another? Where does it all come from? When does it all start? Babies don’t come out hating themselves, right? Is it taught? Is it embedded in our genes? Thankfully, I found several articles to help me understand all of this.

little 2However, I want to start by dispelling a myth that has changed the world. What is that myth? Well, many people today believe that girls get their negative self-image from dolls and cartoons they watch. For example, Dora the Explorer and other iconic kids shows used to be rounder in size (because they’re kids) but people were claiming their size was making their kids obese. Seriously? No, you want to know where I got my negative self-image? I got it from family, friends, and other girls who bullied me. It had nothing to do with Barbie’s unrealistic size. littleI never once thought, “I want to be her size, because it’s what’s pretty.” I saw Barbie as a doll, not as something to aspire to. I never once looked at the old Care-bears and thought, “Look at their size, I should eat more to be like that.” We need to stop blaming unrelated sources for the issues other females are causing. Unfortunately, I don’t see a way to fix it and it only gets worse as you get older. It turns from what other people are saying to you and about you, to what YOU are saying to you and about you.

Ok, back to what I was saying in the beginning. First of all, I want to say that I found an amazing video that I will add below. I hope you watch it because it’s important and goes along with what I said above.

little 3Now, I found an article titled “The Psychology of Insecurity: Where Does Self-hatred Come From?” This answers many of the questions I just posed above: where does it all come from? When does it all start? Babies don’t come out hating themselves, right? Is it taught? Is it embedded in our genes? The article states, “Nobody is born with a gene for self-hatred – it’s an environmental and cultural development that comes from your place in society and your experiences.” This is so unfortunate that the people who are supposed to help us, only cause us to hate ourselves. But it’s not all because you were abused, the article also states, “You can feel insecure simply because your parents worked too much as a kid or had to divide their time among too many siblings. A child’s early identity formation is crucial, and if no one is around to teach them they are valuable, special, and loved, they can have a hard time feeling it later on.” The article ends with saying, “It’s difficult to pinpoint one underlying cause of insecurity. It can start in childhood or it can develop over time. It can cripple you mentally and emotionally, or it can simply make it hard to ask the girl at the bar for her number. But what really matters is that virtually everyone is insecure in one way or another. When you’re working to overcome to absorption of negative attitudes and beliefs about yourself, remember that almost everyone you know has gone through the same battle.”

This was such a blessing to find. Sometimes it’s a good reminder that other people go through this also. But how can I love myself again? How can love me the way I did when I was little? For this, I turned to another article titled “How to Turn Self-Hatred into Self-Compassion” The thing that you need to focus on, according to the article, is self-compassion. The five things they give are as follows:

  1. Talk to yourself the way you talk to someone you care about
  2. Recognize that beliefs do not equal truths
  3. Embrace the concept of “good enough”
  4. Consider turning to spirituality or religion
  5. If you hate yourself for mistakes you made, make amends

gmaLet me talk about these for a moment. First, talking to yourself as if you were talking to someone you love is a good way to look at it. I would never have told my grandma that she’s ugly or fat because I never saw her that way. I saw her as this beautiful, loving, strong woman, who could overcome anything life threw at her. How do I see myself? Definitely not that way…more like the opposite. Second, recognizing the way you believe as not being true is a huge thing. I know I’m not ugly but I tell myself I am. Why? Because other people have told me that I am. Third, how do we embrace the concept of “good enough?” The dictionary says, “adequately good for the circumstances.” We don’t have to be perfect, no one is, but we can do our best and leave the rest up to God. That brings us to number four, turning to spirituality or religion. The whole topic in sacrament meeting yesterday was self-esteem and self-love. One of the speakers said that when you know you are daughter (or son) of God, how can you hate yourself? This hit home for me. No matter who I am or what I do, he will always love me. Perhaps I need to focus on seeing myself the way he sees me? Lastly, number five, make amends for the mistakes you hate yourself for. This could be easier said than done. I am one of those people who lay in bed some nights and a thought comes to my mind, reminding me of what I did wrong months ago and how stupid I was. It’s hard to let go of those things. I think this relates a lot to my post about learning to forgive people who hurt us, honestly, because we hurt ourselves.

beautifulYou may be wondering why I am focusing on this today. Well, for one thing, it’s one of my 30 before 30 items that I need to check off and this helps me hold myself accountable. I’m not going to say that I completely love myself today but I’m working on it. Second, the topic in church yesterday made me want to post about it. I guess that’s how the spirit works, isn’t it?

As always, thank you for visiting my blog. This post took me some time to do because a) I wanted to give you the best information I could and b) no one likes to admit they don’t love themselves. I hope you can check out the inner voice video as well as the song  and other articles I added below. Keep coming back each week for new content. I love you all and I hope this helps you learn to love yourselves as well.

“This fire that we call Loving is too strong for human minds. But just right for human souls.” -Aberjhani

My first holiday post on my blog in 2013 was for Valentine’s Day and I haven’t done one for the same holiday since then. I know, terrible. It may not change every year but it does happen every year. So, I decided to be a bit of research as to why we celebrate this holiday and what I found was interesting.

In order to learn more I turned to Google. I found an article titled Valentine’s Day History as well as a video called Bet You Didn’t know: Valentine’s Day. One thing I noticed in both the article and the video was that it isn’t completely clear as to which St. Valentine we are celebrating. There were three and they all appear to have been put to death on February 14. First you have the Priest who was put to death for performing illegal marriages, in that time young men were not allowed to get married but we supposed to be soldiers instead. Another was a bishop in Terni, and the third St. Valentine, there is almost nothing known about him or his life, except that he met his end in Africa.

Growing up I was told that Valentine’s day originated by a man who was an abusive murderer of women and I always thought it was ironic. In my research, that was proven wrong with every link I sought out. According to the above article and video, it started out as a celebration of fertility. The celebration changed several times and by the 15th century greeting cards were exchanged. Now, about 1 billion cards are given out each Valentine’s Day all around the world. Considering the fact that there are about 7 billion people in the world and you take away those who live in poor countries then 1 billion people exchanging cards is a ton of paper.

16732168_1638455123129546_656703001_oNow that we know a little bit about the history of valentine’s day, why do YOU celebrate? How do you celebrate? What is your worst or best Valentine’s Day memory? Please share bellow. And, as always, thank you for stopping by to read my posts.

Each person feels love in different ways. There is a test you can take the Five Love Languages test here. There are, as it says in the title, 5 love languages; words of affirmation, quality time, receiving gifts, acts of service,  and physical touch. When I first heard about the love languages, I was on my mission. My companion, Sister G., and I were on an exchange and I was with Sister B. She and I were discussing issues I was experiencing at that time and she explained the concept with me. Deciding that physical touch seemed to be my top love language, we continued with that. Sister G hated physical touch, she never wanted any hugs or anything…ever. It was hard for me because I am a hugger, I hug everyone. I didn’t know what to do with that information so I forgot about it. A few months ago, I was thinking about ways I could show love to my husband and the conversation I had with Sister B. came to mind. I proceeded to look up the official quiz and I took it for myself. I was a little surprised to learn that physical touch was not my number one. At 24, when I had taken the official test, These were my results: Words of Affirmation (5), Quality Time (11), Receiving Gifts (4), Acts of Service (4), and Physical Touch (6). The issue with the way we feel love is that its not always the same way those in our lives feel love. Sister G. didn’t feel love with physical touch nor did she feel love with quality time. Looking back, I’d say her number one love language was acts of service. I knew I didn’t want to focus on giving love in the way I feel love so I had my husband take the test after he got home from work. His results were very different from mine; Words of Affirmation (8), Quality Time (6), Receiving Gifts (2), Acts of Service (10), and Physical Touch (4). If we compare my top 2 we get: Quality Time (11) vs. (6) and Physical touch (6) vs. (4). If we compare his top 2 we get: Acts of Service (10) vs. (4) and Words of Affirmation (8) vs. (5). Do you see the difference in our love languages? I do! So, now that I have this information, how to I show him love and how should he show me love? The following image shows what each love language is, how to express it, and what to do after a conflict.

love-languages

I want to extend the invitation to you, reader, to go to the page above and take the test. After you do so, share the test with those you love. Share your number one love language and ask them theirs, you want to know how to show them love and I’m sure you want them to show you love in the way you feel love.

If you have taken the test before, please share your results in the comments below. Thank you for reading!

“Love the life you have while you create the life of your dreams. Don’t think you have to choose one over the other.” -Hal Elrod

More and more people are reading self help books and there are millions to choose from. As most of my readers know I am into Bullet Journaling, see my post here. When I was brand new to the journey back in July 2016, I joined many Bullet Journal groups on Facebook to help me get inspiration for this new journey I was embarking on. Through these groups, I kept seeing pages they called Level 10 Life. I thought it was interesting and I finally decided last week that I wanted to know what it was and why everyone was doing it. I found out where it came from. A self help book, I wasn’t too thrilled. I didn’t want to read it, there’s nothing any book could tell me that I didn’t already here from other people in my life. I brushed it off. Well, curiosity got the best of me and I finally caved and checked the book out from my local library and I am so glad I did. You’re probably thinking “is she ever going to share what the book is called?” I know, I know, I just went on a little tangent and never told you what the book is called. Well, it’s called The Miracle Morning: The Not-So-Obvious Secret Guaranteed to Transform Your Life Before 8AM by Hal Elrod. I started reading it a few days ago and I love it. I thought it was going to be like everything I’ve always heard but it’s not. The Miracle Morning is really life changing but I don’t want you to take it from me. There are thousands of videos from people who have improved their life by incorporating Hal’s morning routine into their day. You can find many of them here.

If you have read the book, please comment with how it have changed your life. I have only done it for a couple of days and exercise alone has made me feel like a better person. I, personally, get up at 4:30am, which is when my husband gets up to get ready for work, and I begin my day. I pray, exercise, and read. I’m trying to get each of Hal’s Life S.A.V.E.R.S. to work and I’m adding a little at a time, as to not overwhelm myself. From there I do homework and house cleaning. Since I have started this routine, I have been getting to sleep earlier, which was an issue for me. I am so glad I started this and I am grateful for all the people in all of the Bullet Journal groups who shared their experiences because if they hadn’t, I may not have ever had the pleasure of reading The Miracle Morning.

“Never give up on what you really want to do. The person with big dreams is more powerful than the one with all the facts.” -H. Jackson Brown, Jr.

It’s another year and I will be the first to admit that I didn’t do as well on my new year’s goals in 2016 as I had hoped. Especially with my blog. I honestly have no excuses for not blogging. I just get…lazy, I guess. I think about doing it but I keep telling myself “I’ll do it later” and later turns into tomorrow, which turns into next week, which turns into never. It’s a never ending, downward spiral. I am so thankful to my loyal reader, though. You have stuck with me through my disappearances. I really do want to be better at my blog. I may not have a big following but I know people check on it. Plus, if I want to be a writer, I need to show the world that I do what I say I’m going to do.

So, my goals for 2016 were to work on the skills my grandma had tried to teach me and to actually write on my blog. You know just how I did with one of them…I was not the best blogger out there. As for working on the skills my grandma tried teaching me, I did ok. I definitely worked more on cooking and I think I am pretty goo at it. Sewing didn’t go over well. I got a lot of stuff I needed in order to sew but we had to pack everything up and we moved into a small studio. There was no room for my sewing area anymore so it all sits in my husband’s parents’ garage.

I think 2016 has had it’s ups and downs. We all know there were a lot of celebrity deaths, which left the world in awe. We moved to a big city, which I never thought I’d do. My aunt almost died, my best friend and her daughter got hit by a car while walking, and my husband’s friend got hit by a car while on his motorcycle; all of which took place in October. I did something new with my hair, which I’ve wanted to do for a while. I actually did that on New Year’s Eve.

This year will be another year full of adventure, full of love, and full of growth. I have no idea what is in store for me this year but I am excited to find out. My goal this year is to be the best possible me I could be.

I know it’s 3 days late but Happy New Year everyone! Thank you for reading

“Let the refining and improving of your own life keep you so busy that you have little time to criticize others.” -H. Jackson Brown Jr.

School is an important part of everyone’s lives. No matter what, you will go to school, whether it be unschooling, homeschool, public school, or private school, you’re going to some form of school. Once we are done with the required 12 years of school, we are faced withe the choice to continue on or stop and look for a different path. Sometimes we don’t even get to make that decision for ourselves, sometimes our parents had already chosen our path.

For me, I always knew I’d go to college but I didn’t feel like I could get into a university, I’d always felt that I wasn’t smart enough. I settled for the local community college while many of my friends went to UCs or CSUs. Don’t get me wrong, I did have friends who joined me at the community college.

Let me tell you, college is hard. They make it seem so wonderful, so fun, so enlightening. No, just no. My first semester I took 15 units (or credits): Math, English, Communications, and Psychology. I did ok, I passed 3 out of 4 of the classes. I had failed my math class, I was upset but I could take it again and next time I’m pass the class. The next semester I took 17 units: Math (same one, again), English (I was an English major so I took a lot of English classes), Political Science, and Astronomy. I didn’t do as well that semester, I failed my math class AGAIN (you only have 3 tries at passing a class, I needed to pass it next time), Astronomy (it involved a lot of math and science), and Political Science. My third semester I took 16 units: History, Photography, English (2 classes), Physical Education, and Child Development. That was the worst semester of them all. I was sick with a fever almost every week, I got into 2 car accidents (neither were my fault), my family moved out of the state, and my relationship of 6 months ended because I was stupid. It was all bad. I failed everything, I stopped going. How could I go with a fever all the time? I would try again next time.

There wasn’t a next time for a long time. I failed miserably in school and I took a break for a couple of years. I went on my mission and realized what I needed to do when I got home. I was going to actually make school a priority. And that’s just what I did.

When I got home from my mission I took a good hard look at my grades, so much failure, and vowed it would never be that way again. I was on academic probation, the restrictions sucked but I deserved it. I took 2 classes each semester for my first 3 semesters back at school. I retook as many classes as I could. My first semester back, Spring 2015, I took 2 new classes: 2 child development classes. I had declared a new major and wanted to pursue it at full force. I passed both classes with A’s and B’s. I took my first summer semester, summer 2015, with 2 classes: swimming and the child development class I had failed before. I got my first ever 4.0 (all A’s) in my whole life, I was thrilled. Next, Fall 2015, I took a lower math class and another child development class, passing both of them. In Spring 2016 I decided to take 3 classes so I took my failed math class again (for the last try) and 2 child development classes, passing them all. I finally passed my math class. Over the summer I was supposed to take the next math class, a failed English class, and a child development class but a lot was going and the school decided to change my schedule without letting me know so I had to drop the classes. This semester I am taking three classes: History, English, and photography, all of which I had failed but plan on passing this time.

I am now on good academic standing, which is a relief, but now that we moved out of the area I am going to be transferring to a local college. I’m still planning on taking 3 more classes through my current college in the Spring but in the Fall of next year, I will be transferring. I am hoping that I will continue to do well, I know I can. Here is a picture of my failed classes:

grades

I don’t share this to make a fool out of myself or to prove that young adults aren’t smart. I share this because I’m human, I make mistakes. I also learn from mistakes and make them right. School may not be right for you, at least not right out of high school, and that’s ok. If you do feel that college is your place, do it but don’t slack off like I did. You’re better than that, so was I but I had no one to tell me that. If you’re struggling then get help. If you are overwhelmed, drop out the right way. Talk to your counselor, do what you need to do. Maybe take a break and do something else for a little while. Just be you.

Thanks for reading. I hope you have a great day and do great things.

“Always turn a negative situation into a positive situation.” -Michael Jordan

So, this weekend was busy! Since I leave on Wedenesday, March 6, I had so much to do! Saturday was my “farewell” party/ get together plus my best friend of 14 years, her name is Yasmin, got her mission call and had her get together to open it right after. And Sunday (today) I went to church. Tomorrow I am going to clean someone’s house for a little extra money and then Tuesday I get set apart as a Full-time missionary!

My farewell party was a….failure. LOL. I invited like everyone I knew, except my own family because they are not being supportive. Only five people showed up (plus the 3 people who lived in that house). Don’t get me wrong, it was still awesome, but I had hoped that more people would have been there.

From left to right: Michaela, Me, and Victoria. At the Farewell Party/
From left to right: Michaela, Me, and Victoria. At the Farewell Party/

My friend Yasmin’s mission letter opening party was great! There were a ton of people there that I hadn’t seen in FOREVER. A couple of them I hadn’t seen for over 4 years. I was wonderful! She was called to the Pennsylvania Philadelphia Mission and she reports to the Missionary Training Center (MTC) on June 12, 2013. She is so excited and watching her open her letter made me realize that I was leaving for my mission in a matter of days! It’s crazy. But I was so happy to be there for her. And she won’t be too far from me!

So church was great but another one of my best friends of 14 years, David, made me a little sad because he said that today could be the last time we see each other for a few years because when I get home from my mission he will be away at BYU Provo. This saddened me because he has always been a rock in my life and now we are growing up and moving on in life.

Tomorrow, I will finish packing and make sure I have everything I need. Tuesday, I will be a missionary for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (if you have questions about the church please refer to my blog post titled

“Sul sul” -Sims

If you can’t guess by the title of this post, it is going to be about my second obsession: The Sims 3! First, there are some Sim to English translations at the bottom of the post so if you want to know what Sims say, go read it.

Sims 3So, If you haven’t ever played The Sims 3 before, you should give it a try (or don’t because it is very addictive). The game can take up a lot of your time if you allow it and a lot of your money as each Expansion Pack (an addition) is usually about $40.00 new and a Stuff Pack (you get more stuff) is about $20.00. They aren’t done making games for The Sims 3 but I suspect they are close because in the live broadcast for the 70’s 80’s & 90’s Stuff Pack they announced several Expansion Packs that were in the making, one of which being

University Life which comes out this month, March 5th, actually. Which, someone actually just pre-ordered it for me. I prefer to have my games pre-ordered because you get exclusive content and I like my exclusive content. I have only pre-ordered three of the last  four Expansions though (Pets, Showtime, Supernatural). Seasons was a Christmas gift, which I got the exclusive content somehow with that too. I actually barley started playing in July of 2011. Ha ha, I know some of you are thinking “Barely?” Yes, barely. I have friends who have been in love with the game and have Sims, Sim 2, and Sims 3. I never played any Sims game until Sims 3 so I have no idea what the others are like. I have been told that Sims 3 has better qualities in some aspects and not so good aspects compared to the others.

So, I’m sure some of you are wondering why I am so in love with this game. Well, you get to make a little person and live a life that’s not really yours. Some people say that it’s like playing God but I don’t really see it that way because God has control over Everything, including when everyone dies and how. In Sims 3, you can die unexpectedly by a Meteor and you can’t do anything about it (This happened to me once and I was in shock). Or die eating a Jellybean, and again, you can’t do anything about it. I mean yes, you can deliberately kill your Sim in a few ways: Drowning, fire, freezing, electrocution. I don’t like to kill my Sims, I like to try to get as far into their lives as possible. And another question you might have is “Why do you waste so much money on something so pointless?” Well, I cannot answer that in a grown-up way so I will just say that I do it because this game is something I love. Besides, I can always give it to my kids when I have them and they are teens (if computers in their generation still read CDs lol). And in my opinion, buying the physical copy is better than the downloadable version for a few reasons. The main reason I like them is because you have something to actually hold and show people. That’s just me though. Well, I hope you all learned something from this post about my love of TS3 (The Sims 3). I’m sure I would have been more productive in my college courses if I hadn’t had these games but that’s just because I needed to sort out my priorities. Now that they are sorted, when I come back the games will be much lower. Goodnight everyone!

Ok, this post is about my obsession: Harry Potter. Have you ever read any of the books? There are seven: Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s StoneHarry Potter and the Chamber of SecretsHarry Potter and the Prisoner of AzkabanHarry Potter and the Goblet of FireHarry Potter and the Order of the PhoenixHarry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. Have you seen any of the movies? There are eight…Deathly Hallows is split into two movies: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2. I have read the first 3 books all the way through and the fourth book about half way through. I have seen all of the movies though and this causes some people to say that I am “not a true fan” just because I have only seen the movies. So what if I’ve only seen the movies. There are different kinds of Harry Potter fans. I am obsessed with the series and when I come home, I will try to finish reading the books. I own five or six of them so getting them is no problem. I have even decided that when I have kids I will have a Harry Potter themed baby shower, I even have stuff saved on my pinterest account.

Little onsies for babies: Hufflepuff, Slytherin, Ravenclaw, And Grifindor.

Then, when my kids get to the age of 11 I will give them each a Hogwarts acceptance letter, like the one I uploaded here. And I will make their birthday party “Hogwarts themed.” People have told me that this is mean because it will break their hearts to find out that it’s not real, my kids will know the difference between fantasy and reality I’m sure so it won’t be that bad, sheesh.

There is a website for those who enjoy Harry Potter whether you are a movie fan, a book fan, or both. It is Pottermore . On this site, you go through the whole series and you get to act as if YOU are a student going to Hogwarts. You get a wand, sorted into one of the four houses, and whatever else is needed. Certain chapters get unlocked at a time, like right now you can only go up to the third book, seventh chapter. I was sorted into Hufflepuff and my wand had a unicorn center. my wandpuff  It’s pretty awesome! I actually just recently made my own wand with my friend Michaela. We are total Potterheads, which is the term you use when talking about someone in the fandom. Urban dictionary defines  Potterhead as “Amazingly cool people who are obsessed with Harry Potter.”

Anyway, I just wanted to share my wonderful thoughts on Harry Potter with the world. Everyone should try out Pottermore! You never know what you will find. If you have or make an account, post your username on here in the comments or just add me, my username is MidnightStone16666. I hope one day that the next generation can enjoy the love of the series just as I and people in my generation have. I love the message of the books, and before you tell your kids that it is an inappropriate book, actually read it first. There is no “dark magic” or something that is going to brainwash your child. It’s just a fiction book, let them enjoy their imagination! Well, I’ll post another post before I leave! Love you all, even if I don’t know you. Have a wonderful day. And yes, I am an American for those of you who want to argue that the title of the fist book, movie is wrong. I know that in other countries it is something else. Here in the USA, it is what I posted. Thank you for reading!

The wand that I made. It's dark green and pink with little diamonds on the handle. The little ball at the top, that's the handle. It's a purple and green bead.
